JESUS - OUR SONLIGHT

"Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he
that follows me
shall not walk in darkness,  but shall have the light of life. "
John 8:12-20

A few months ago I bought a lovely plant at a nursery in an effort to brighten and add color to my living room.   It was just an ordinary houseplant but I knew it would grow to a perfect size for the room so I put it into a big brass planter, adding rich soil and plant food for health.  I placed it on a table near the sliding door leading to the back yard and it immediately made the room seem open and fresh.  What a difference it made!  It was perfect there!

AFTER a while I could see how healthy it had become except it began to grow at an odd slant, the top leaning to the left nearest the sliding glass door.  It appeared to be reaching for the opening where the sunlight came into the room.  I began to think about this, realizing that the plant was actually stretching and straining for the sun.  It continued its growth, shooting up to about 4 feet in height but it kept that odd slant.  I tried to straighten it out to no avail.  The other side of the plant, although green, was being deprived, I later figured out, and allowed itself to be pulled along to the warmth.  It was then I realized if I had turned the planter at time intervals, the plant would have remained straight and upright, all sides sharing in the sun’s precious goodness.

WE too, are dependant on the sun.  But it is the living Son Who brings the warming sunshine into our lives.  He is the One who brings light to our world of darkness and despair.  Psalms 27:1 says “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”  If we do not have the Son, our lives become empty for there is no joy, hope or sacred sunlight to sustain our growth.  We become stunted, distorted and deformed, reaching out for whatever artificial light we can find, only to later realize this is a man made glow that will fade away in time.

THE light that Jesus Christ offers points the way to everlasting life and right now help, for unlike human friends, we can call on Him at any time and from any place.  He is our street atlas that guides our feet to Him.  His radiance illuminates our path, blocking out the forks in the road and exposing Satan, who through his temporary and earthly fixes, will kill our hopes and fill us with fear and doubt.  The Lord's directions are sure, giving markers that guarantee and give confidence, with destinations that are eternal.

SOMETIMES we become weak and alienated from the light of Christ by our actions or a lapsed relationship from him.   Without Him we often find ourselves alone and in isolation, for we are trying to survive in a world of darkness and shadows where true sunlight cannot reach us.  It is then that we live in oppression, fear and injustice without the help of our Savior.  We have no illumination or guideposts.  It is only when we are in the aura of the Lord that we are nurtured by Him, standing tall under His blessed glow.   Saint John 5: 8- tells us, “for once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light  (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.  Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.”

IMAGINE the panic we all feel when our house lights go off!  We run to the front door and check the streetlights only to find them dark and  sounds of neighborhood televisions mute.  We feel an isolation that is frightening.  If we have depended solely upon cordless telephones we find an additional worry for we cannot call in a “no service” report or find out the cause for the darkness.  We become frantic!

BUT being without electricity is not the same as living without the spiritual light that is offered to us.    It is not as important to have artificial light as having the spiritual light of Jesus..    He tells us that this is a light that can never be extinguished unless we turn our backs and choose obscurity and gloom.  We do not have to be dependent on man made electricity or even the magnificent sunlight that God created for the good as well as the evil to enjoy.  What Jesus offers is the personal illumination of the soul that no one can suppress; illumination that brightens our lives and the innermost corners of us.  With this is the knowledge that we have become the heirs of the Heavenly Father and His kingdom.   This gives us a surety in our steps, a confidence and pride in our manner, a positive knowledge of all that God intends for us.  Read John 12:46 where Jesus said, “I have come to the world as its light to keep anyone who believes in me from remaining in the darkness”.

IN John 11: 9-10 “Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.  But if any one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."  And so, in the sunlight of our Savior we have an eternal light to direct our way so that we do not fall but can find courage and strength within its illumination.  It can never be destroyed or blotted out.   If we live in the shadows of this earth, we will fall prey to wiles of evil.  Like a mirage in the desert, we will pursue what isn’t there and become confused and lost.  But if we are in the light of the Lord, we can see where we are going, we can make our way to Him Who is always present for us.

IF you have been in a prison of darkness, surrounded by the murky shadows of a life devoid of spiritual faith and hope, turn on the light; the light of Jesus Christ.  He gives substance and reality, color and meaning, dimension and hope, strength and courage through His everlasting light.

AND so when our days become dark and dreary, when the night becomes a hopeless void and we find ourselves bent over like my houseplant without the sun, let’s open our hearts to the SON WHO is the Light of the World.  Like my living plant straining for sunlight, reach for the risen, everlasting and living Jesus Christ, for through Him we can grow tall and straight.

Let’s reach out our spiritual arms to Him so that we can flourish under His warmth and His everlasting Sonlight.

While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons and daughters of light."  John 12:36
